In the year 1984, carrying with me an old and borrowed Uher 4400, I spent several lonely nights in the Western and Eastern Amsterdam harbors to do... fieldrecordings... Scattered around me lay ruins - ruins of once thriving harbors, ruins of once thriving factories, ruins of trains (!), ruins of cranes, ruins overall. There was the distant smell of the past, the reality of the present - and in the architect's drawing a glimpse of the ( nearby ) future.
I recorded the ( heartbreaking and unnerving ) silence, the ( soft ) breeze, the wind across lonely fences, the highway in the distance, the (freight)trains across the ( western ) bridge, the ( sometimes pounding ) rain, and every ( crackling, squeaking, rattling and beeping ) sound which came along - and they slowly gathered around me, as if we were long lost friends.
Now ( 2015 ) they are back once again - originally ( of course ) recorded analogue, now carefully ( !! and - mind you - heavily edited !! ) digitalized as stand alone fieldrecordings, in fact as standalone art. Mainly they have one thing in common : no homo sapiens involved ( except for the fool on the hill and his 'recording device' ).
At that time I didn't have the faintest idea of what was exactly happening - I just felt extremely lonely and more than ever restless. Now I know I was in a period of transition, from living the life of just another 'ok! I feel good!' regular guy to the highly uncertain future of artistry. It wasn't untill the mid 90's that I settled down for just a little bit. Overall the tapes here ( a dozen or so ) reflect a sense of loss and 'put up' eternal nature against the fleeting existence of men. Don't expect too much - it has been a long time. On the other hand: exquisite?
